How to get a job overseas

You are looking for a job and you are interested in working overseas. Don’t expect that the resumes and interviews are the same in every country. They all have their own habits and ways of coping with solicitations.

You know how you can execute a solicitation in Shanghai, Brussels or in Copenhagen? If you don’t and you want to work in these cities, I suggest that you search as much as you can find about it. Is your marital status relevant on your CV? Do you write down all your experiences? For instance in England, a good resume is considered short, really punctual and around one page. What do you wear during a job interview? Can you speak overtly about money? How much do they usually pay in these countries?… These are all examples of what you should keep in mind when you are applying for a job placement abroad.

Furthermore, there are some requirements in several countries depending on where you are applying. Sometimes it is required to talk about your hobbies, put a picture on your CV (for example in Spain), add your date of birth, talk about your language skills (entire Europe),… I, for once, had to write about my favourite music bands, favourite movies and series, favourite soccer teams,… The interviewers said that they wanted to know more about me and see if I could fit in the company’s culture and habits. So it is important that you find out everything that is necessary to insert on your CV and to say during the solicitation.

The last advice I can give is to write a great cover letter and a solid CV because you have to win the confidence of foreign people who can also choose from candidates of their home country.

Corporate employment departments receive everyday as many as 50.000 CV’s but only accept or hire 200 or 300 according to a trade publication that is specialized in making your resume interesting and competitive. This means that what you write on your resume is going to be your key to success.

The time is valuable to those who work in the recruitment department. They do not have the time to spend on resumes with long explanations. They only take 30 seconds to review them; this means that you have to show your best in short words.

The grammar is really important; trusting only on the spelling check of your computer is not enough. Sometimes we use words that sound right for us, but they are not necessary what we mean in the context and in the end, our job resume is going to have a very different meaning. These mistakes are look bad on your CV and the recruiters are not going to call you to ask what you mean.

Expressions are very important and you have to be careful with them and know when and how to use them. Checking the dictionary every time is going to help you out with this problem. Also, it is crucial to include just the necessary information in relation to the jobs that you have done before.

Stupid layouts are everywhere and you need to take your time and use them properly. Punctuations are the key of the sentences and if you forget how to use them, you will show that you do not care to express yourself as you should. Everything you write down is going to be revised and carefully considered. Therefore, to be clear and to write well is going to help you to succeed, because you have only one chance.

Tips to write a CV

May 4, 2010

When you are applying for a job, the first thing you need to do is updating your CV. It’s even more important these days because of the competitive job market. A creative and solid CV is essential to get an interview. So there are a couple of tips which can help you to write a solid CV:

The first tip is to keep your resume as compact as possible. When it comes to CV’s, less is definitely more. No-one wants to read a CV that is overloaded with unnecessary information. The key is to keep it strict and powerful.

Secondly, please don’t make any spelling or typing mistakes. A resume is a way to make a first impression, make sure that you don’t look clumsy and unprofessional.

Another tip is to give solid examples. When you are talking about your references, write every useful reference down with co-ordinates.

And keep your resume professional. Avoid using too many decorative recourses like colors, fittings,… As I already said, it’s all about impression and a color book just doesn’t seem professional.

But the most important tip I can give is to be creative and dare to stand out. It is so difficult to be remembered these days and the competitive market doesn’t help. So find a way to stay in the minds of the hiring managers by doing something innovative, but stay professional.
