I actually had a habit before of searching my name on search engines. I don’t really know why I had such idea, but right now it made me realize that what I actually did was a normal thing to do.
The thing that I was actually doing is called egosurfing. Defined by Wikipedia, is the practice of searching for one’s own given name, surname, full name, pseudonym, or screen name on a popular search engine, to see what results appear. It’s also called vanity searching, which is considered to be as an online reputation management or self-monitoring in the Internet.
No wonder people are searching their names as to how certain websites are conveying their reputation. I mean, naturally, the Internet is the society “made cyber”. If you are a person who values reputation, then you will really be taking heed of this.
So what does it have to do with resume writing? Well, everything.
Your reputation matters to you especially to those hiring managers. When you happen to make a CV sample or resume samples that you pass to a certain big company, your name will definitely be “investigated” by the HR’s. They are currently using search engines to research their applicants as to how well they really are as a person. Aside from search engines, they will also search the applicants’ names on social networking sites like Facebook or LinkedIn.
Undeniably speaking, hiring applicants are indeed searching how well you really are based on your online reputation. If you are a person who is socially active in the net, you better make your reputation by improving it. Here are some tips.
- Avoid uploading undesirable videos or pictures in your social media sites. Likewise, remove yourself from tags of videos and uploads that might pull down your reputation.
- LinkedIn is one social site that can boost your reputation especially on the professional aspect.
- Blogs make you become recognizable especially on your skills of expression. Making your own blog site is a recommendation.
- Monitor your reputation by simply egosurfing. There’s no harm done.
Hope these tips are very helpful to you.
