resumeThis will be one of the many things we do after we have finished an online degree or graduated from college. During the process of a job chase a potential employer may ask about our salary history, if not our salary expectation. This is quite an uneasy question. Most of the time employers are only trying to screen out applicants whose salary is either below or above the range they are willing to pay for their hired employee/s that is why they request this information. When this happens there are a number of ways to respond to the employer requesting the salary history. Some tips can help you respond to such request successfully and gracefully. These are: Acknowledging Request, Dodging Gracefully, Providing a Salary Range and Doing your Research.

Acknowledging Request of the employer is important. You can do this either in your cover letter or on your resume. A simple statement such as “With regards to your request about my salary history I would prefer we discuss information during my interview.”

Dodging Gracefully. This means postponing the answer to the question. Your goal must be to obtain an interview and meet the employer successfully. As soon as you are on the actual setting, you will have ample chance to sell yourself. Prove you are as great as you are on paper (resume) and impress the employer; it’s like applying for a student loan and ensuring your credibility.

Providing a Salary Range. A salary range is better than a specific number when proving the details to your employer’s request. See to it that you are quoting a base salary range that does not take into account the yearly bonuses and various benefits. You can also say that you are interested about the position and you consider yourself flexible to salary negotiations.

Doing your Research. Prior to attending an interview make sure you have done your research. Check out the company’s history. Review websites and human resources to determine the general salary range for the position you are interested. The important thing is to seek out salary information and prepare yourself for an interview, and respond to questions about your salary with more confidence and ease.
