After those alarming reports of massive job layoffs because of the ongoing economic downturn in America, many countries of the world are also affected by the crisis as they are dependent on American economy. In fact, in many countries, thousands of employees of American companies have already lost their jobs because they were laid off or victims of redundancy.

Alistair McNeish, PricewaterhouseCoopers Human Capital consulting firm’s managing director said employees should already prepare for the worst that may come as anything can happen as far as retrenchments, layoff and redundancy of duties and functions in the workplace. He said the only good thing to remember is the question, Are you ready and prepared for the worst thing that may happen once you lose your job?

McNeish said for those who lost their jobs without expecting it would happen it is really normal there maybe the so-called element of disappointment and surprise which sometimes result to bad temper, with other employees ended at suing their company for unwanted termination. There are several important considerations that employees should think it over so that they can be ready for the worst thing that might happen in their careers.

1. Improvement of skills
He said while you aren’t a victim yet of layoff or redundancy which may cause you your job, it’s better to improve your skills, as well as update your tools. In this way, you are preparing yourself for the future. He said what employee can offer to new employers is one of the most important considerations employees should realize. A career online is also a good solution to consider if you are interested.

2. Transferable skills
If you will be laid off from your present job do you have transferable skills so that you can continue working with another company. This is very important so that your other un-harness skills would be given importance now. This might be the skill you need that would give your career a second life. You can also study by using student loan programs for you to develop another skill you can use.

3. Current resume is vital
McNeish said for those who start looking for a new job should make it sure their resume is current. He said an applicant should think of his resume as a living document and one should change its emphasis depending on the kind of job you are applying for. An applicant should also think of the kind of training that he had in the past.

4. Check resume grammar, spelling
He said before an applicant submits his resume to the supposed employer he should check first the content, grammar and spelling so that his document looks presentable to the receiver. The CV resume, McNeish said, is the first contact of the employer and this must look professional and neatly-prepared.
